Salmon — Feed with caution
Cooked, unseasoned, and boneless salmon is generally safe for dogs in moderation and can be a good source of omega-3 fatty acids. However, raw or undercooked salmon is very dangerous due to the risk of Salmon Poisoning Disease, which can be fatal if not treated promptly. Always ensure salmon is thoroughly cooked and free of bones and seasonings before offering it to your dog.
TOXIC COMPOUND
Nanophyetus salmincola (parasite)
Raw or undercooked salmon can contain the parasite Nanophyetus salmincola, which carries the rickettsial organism Neorickettsia helminthoeca, causing Salmon Poisoning Disease (SPD). This organism infects the dog's lymph nodes, intestines, and other organs.
DOSE THRESHOLD
Consumption of even a small amount of infected raw or undercooked salmon can be fatal if untreated. Cooked, boneless, unseasoned salmon is generally safe in moderation.
